My wife, as she often does, named the painting.   This was one of those paintings that flowed onto the canvas at first, but the hawk was troublesome.  I wanted the hawk to be recognizable but when painted with big strokes like the landscape a friend thought it was a pigeon.  It took several hawk painting studies based on other photographs to get this final version.  Discouragingly an artist friend said, \"great painterly landscape but the hawk is too sharply defined.\"  Encouragingly the \"pigeon\" friend told me it was much better.  One of the hardest things to do as a painter is to know when you did a good job. Lillia studied Matisse for many years and often painted using his approach.  She passed on this approach at her son's studio where I worked under her for three days on this painting.\r\n\r\nAfter I finished this painting, she challenged me to do it again, but in my own style. A few days ago, I was able to see how to improve some things that have always bugged me about this painting. so, I stripped off the varnish and worked over the entire painting until I was happy with it. It has an incredible 200-degree panoramic view.  I was inspired by two familiar shaped mountains, TableRock and Hawksbill, that appear tiny on the horizon because they are still 20 miles away.  The dead tree on the left and the windblow evergreen on the right were really there and representative of many in the area.  I was delighted when the setting sun lighted these two peaks though there was heavy overcast.
